PROJECT OVERVIEW:

 In order to mitigate the cataclysmic post-flood scenario of 2011, since that BEST has been working in Collaboration with UN-WFP in Mirpur Khas Sindh and successfully dealt and got rid of emergency and early recovery phases while implemented one each cash for work and food for work project respectively in various union councils of Mirpur Khas. ECHO mission had visited the sites and expressed their contentment upon overall project achievements. In 2013 UN-WFP initiated protracted relief and recovery operations (PRRO) in Southern Sindh which has been focused upon disaster resilient activities linked with sustainable livelihood while following the same cash for work modality. BEST started project implementation since February, 2013 in 161 villages of four union councils namely Kangoro and Mirkhuda Bux of tehsil Digri while UC Khan and Mirpur Old of tehsil Hussain Bux Maree of district Mirpur Khas Sindh. Complying to meet the unambiguous emphasis of ECHO mission and BEST statutory policy, Project team has focused upon gender equity as a cross-cutting theme. For this purpose BEST ensured 11.5% female registration of the total case load. After female registration the challenging task was the engagement of such huge number of female while adhering with WFP mandatory domain, territorial cultural and traditional restrictions of the area. BEST project team arranged various focus group discussions regarding the finding new female-centric activities as a result certain activities have been selected which were the indispensible needs of community in the perspective of livelihood sustainability. BEST technical staff framed work norms, designs and specifications and consequently WFP endorsed for the implementation, During reporting period  BEST disbursed cash amounting PKR; 75229200/- among 20,897 registered participants.

PROJECT TARGET AREA:

BEST had carried out a detail assessment based upon the basic needs of the community before formal implementation of the project while in close coordination with district administration and sticking with mandatory domain of UN-WFP. Following the analysis of VAM unit of WFP regarding the food insecurity and feasibility of CFW scope of work BEST selected four union councils as under-tabulated for project implementation with mutual consensus of WFP and district administration.
